Film of the Day #2: Earlier today I watched ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’, then I rounded off the night with Lars Von Triers ‘Dancer in the Dark’. I thought this was quite an unusual film, its definitely the most experimental and strange musical I’ve ever seen.
Although this isn’t classified as a Dogme 95 film, it still has a certain Dogme 95 feel to it. The hand-held camera gives it a documentary appearance, which irritated me at first, but then I got used to it.
Bjork was, of course, excellent in the film, but everybody knows that by now. Her acting was fantastic, and her eccentric musical style fitted in perfectly with the feel of the film.
If you want a film that plays with your emotions, this is certainly one of them. One moment the mood is sad, then within a split second it cuts to a musical scene and its all happy and dancing.
This is definitely a film worth seeing, its about 12 years old now so if you’ve been sleeping on it for this long, trust my opinion and watch it!

Love this one, it’s so heartbreaking and I wish that Bjork had done more acting after it ):
